Yes! All of our shipping materials are plastic-free and are recycled, recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable. We also purchase carbon offset credits, so all of our shipping is carbon-neutral.
Wendigo exists to reduce waste on our planet and drive the consumer economy towards a sustainable future. We have three specific strategies to make this happen.
First, we want to stop the creation of new waste wherever possible by sourcing sustainable products and getting them to consumers in a zero-waste environment.
Second, we want to repurpose existing waste before it reaches oceans and landfills by finding and promoting new commercial applications for recycled plastic. Think clothing made from recycled plastic bottles or skateboards made from recycled fishing nets.
Third, we want to create a market for plastic waste that is large enough to support the removal of plastic from our oceans at a commercial scale. What is now considered trash, we want to turn into treasure.
People and Planet Before Profits: Our mission for sustainability comes first. Profit is a tool to improve the lives of people and the planet that they live on - not the other way around. We pursue profit to empower us to do the right thing - so it doesn't make sense for us to do the wrong thing to achieve that profit.
Sustainable Sourcing: All products should be made from sustainable materials, harvested in ways that cause minimal or zero harm to the environment.
Fair Labor and Fair Trade: People are important. We will review our suppliers to ensure that our products are manufactured in environments where people are treated ethically and fairly.
Cruelty Free: It's never necessary to harm an animal to produce a quality product. We only source products that are free from animal testing, and the vast majority of our products are vegan.
Giving Back: We look for strategic initiatives and align our business with them to make a meaningful difference.
Our name comes from the rich folklore of the First Nations Algonquin tribes. For these early natives, the Wendigo was a horrifying monster that warned of the dangers of excessive greed.
According to the legends, when a human committed the act of cannibalism, they would be possessed by the spirit of a Wendigo. From that day forward, no matter how much they ate, they would always continue to be hungry. That story became a metaphor for all greed: when people do things the easy way, instead of the right way, their appetites will grow until they become unstoppable monsters.
Our modern world is possessed by many destructive appetites that we would like to stop. Our company name was carefully chosen to align with our mission: warning others about, and reversing the impact of, humanity's excessive greed.
